A quick overview of electric scooter repair and maintenance
We often find the fault only after a long path. However, we can get better at this, at breaking things down and making a comprehensive impression. However, it usually takes a while to find out the cause of the fault. This is because the effect of a malfunction usually occurs somewhere other than where the fault itself is ultimately found. As usual, experience helps and speeds things up. In the electric parts of electric scooters, this shuttling is quite common. As an example, let's think about a few problems from history and where to look for solutions to them. The basic principle is that any part of any device can be the cause of the failure. Man has piled it up. It can be disassembled and reassembled.
You often hear that the electric motor is broken, or something is wrong with it. It is quite rare that the electric motor itself is broken. In electric scooters, the electric motor is quite strong and quite difficult to break. Impacts in the right places, use of too high a voltage, or constant moisture. The main power cable cluster going to the electric motor is often somewhat exposed. The wires come from the side, so hitting that point or hitting something hard enough does the job and bends the strands of the wire or wires enough so that the current no longer flows. Voltage too high. In electric scooters, the motor is usually underdriven, which means that the amount of current can be increased from standard, but the limit is reached somewhere and the motor stalls. Moisture does its job slowly but surely. There are a lot of metal parts in the engine and they do rust. Rust prevents the flow of electricity in the motor and is difficult to brush and remove. You can't even clean an electric motor as well.
The reason why the motor is often suggested as the fault in electric scooters is that many malfunctions radiate to the motor.
the electric motor rotates, but unevenly.
At low speed this is usually not noticeable, but when you accelerate it starts to happen. What could be the reason? Uneven power supply? Something is preventing the electricity from fully passing through. Start by checking the wires connecting the control unit/central unit/controller and the motor, and especially their electrical connectors. Very often the connectors and their poor contact are often the cause of the engine coughing. See if they look healthy on the outside? Are there signs of overheating or even calloused spots? Try the connectors one by one. Do they feel properly connected and are they intact, i.e. not broken from the inside. All the above-mentioned corroded, damaged, broken, bad connection, installation... prevent the flow of electricity.. How and why connectors or wires become corroded or loaded. The electric scooter and its power parts are under a lot of pressure if, for example, you go uphill. An electric scooter clearly wouldn't be able to push it with pleasure, but you increase the pressure. The second one is at the bottom of the gas for long periods of time. Think about a car or another motor game. The same idea, although a different source of energy, but the principle is the same.
If the fault is in the connectors, cut the wire at a suitable distance to expose the fresh wire. Strip the wire appropriately and replace the connectors.
Another thing that can cause the engine to behave in the strangest ways is a fault in the control unit, i.e. the controller. In general, the central units of electric scooters recognize such faults quite well and locate them. At that time, the indicator light "controller error" is displayed on the LED display.
Electric scooter battery failure
It can manifest itself in many ways. Fast acceleration and the escoot goes out of power. The first thing that comes to mind is a touch fault, a controller fault, or a problem with one of the connectors. If you wait a moment, the electric scooter will start again. The battery shows completely normal and even numbers when measured. This is a battery fault and is usually caused by the battery's BMS (battery management system) reacting to the battery's rising temperature and turning on the safety system. The situation is not dangerous. The BMS just reacts oversensitively, i.e. in the wrong way. This can be fixed, but requires a battery expert. It's not worth going to the lottery yourself. The same battery can work quite normally with a lighter rider, but the BMS of the battery is messed up for one reason or another.
A situation where the electric scooter is powered on but does not respond to the throttle. See if there is an indicator light on the meter, on the led display.
No indicator light, i.e. the central unit is not in stop mode.
Set off from the pad again. Check if the motor is properly attached to the controller. Another check, whether the wires between the controller and the gas led control unit are properly connected. One of the wires in the wiring harness sends the speed from the handle to the central unit. The fault may be in these so-called meter wires. You can ask your dealer or manufacturer what the purpose of each wire is. If the connections feel good and everything else looks normal, you can measure the wire with a 4.5-5V meter to check if the fault is in the wires themselves.
Another reason why an electric scooter does not respond to the throttle is the power supply to the motor. Try it Does the engine feel heavy to turn. If you feel it, then this indicates that the motor is not receiving electricity. Check the connectors and check the condition of the main electrical cable going to the motor. You can see the latter from the top without its larger openings.
The electric scooter does not turn on
Turn on the power and try to accelerate. Even if the LED screen is dark, the electric scooter can still work. This is a quick way to test the LED screen. You just crop it out at the beginning.
Next, check and test the charger. Does the green light come on when the charger is in the wall. Otherwise, does the charger seem OK? Try charging the electric scooter again. If possible, try another charger. The battery may very well be completely empty. The reason could be that your charger just isn't working or there could be a fault in the charging port on the electric scooter. It may be damaged or it may be poorly attached to the battery. In almost all brands of electric scooters, you have to open a little further. In all cases, the charger, the charger plug, the charging terminals, the charger shows a green light, even though the power is not flowing, and the battery is empty. At this stage, it's also a good idea to measure the battery if you start testing the connectors of the charging plug. Does the battery measurement show values within the battery range between 31.5-41.5 (36 V) in batteries, and is the reading stable. The numbers don't add up, so the battery is intact.
Check the connectors between the battery and the charging plug, as well as the connectors between the battery and the controller. And also, check the connectors between the meter and the controller. One of the reasons for the current not flowing may be in these wires. The command does not run.
Why the electric scooter does not start
The reason for this can be found in several different factors. By limiting and testing them one by one, you will locate the fault. Quite often, we have noticed that even though the fault has appeared over time, the reason for it is that it was done by the previous maintenance guy. Poor quality of service. Loose connector installation, poorly stripped wires, too short wire ends.
Sometimes water, or rather moisture, has done its damage, if maintenance does not take care to renew the seals at the same time as opening important parts.
Good and certified maintenance companies do take things into account according to their reputation. However, water is always a devilish factor when it comes to electrical components. If you notice that moisture has gotten in, you can be prepared to measure quite a few connectors in the worst case and then renew them. You can see pretty well with your eyes that everywhere looks oxidized. However, dry the work site right from the start and wait a while for the drying to take effect.
