We have heard various interpretations of the new Road Traffic Insurance Act. To clarify, neither Meeko's City nor Pro models are covered by the law by default. That is, they do not require insurance.
The law itself is quite straightforward and clear. With regard to electric scooters in private use, it is not necessary to obtain a new road traffic insurance if the criteria below are met.
- weight < 25 kg
- power max. 1000W.
- top speed < 25 km/h
The weight of the electric scooter is less than 25 kg, top speed less than 25 km/h, maximum power 1000w.
Are the owners of Meeko obliged to obtain the Road Traffic Insurance Act?
Meeko owners are not obliged to buy road traffic insurance . When buying, Meekos (City and Pro) meet the above criteria. Both models weigh well under 25 kg. Depending on the year of manufacture, the weight may vary slightly. The reason for this can be found in product development. For example, strengthening the front fork, strengthening the springs and increasing the battery capacity slightly increased the weight, but the weight still remains below 20 kg. Meeko Pro 5.0 currently weighs around 18 kg and City 5.0 15 kg. Both Meeko models are sold with a speed limit of <25 km/h. Total powers. Meeko City 350W and Meeko Pro 500W. Neither model meets the third (max 1000W) requirement of the Road Insurance Act.
The purpose of the new Road Insurance Act.
"The law is different depending on whether the electric scooter is owned by a rental company or a private consumer. An ordinary consumer must take out traffic insurance if the electric scooter weighs more than 25 kilograms or travels more than 25 kilometers per hour. On the other hand, the obligation to insure rental companies always applies regardless of the speed or weight of the kickboard."
"Here, we specifically wanted to avoid the fact that rental companies would have brought lighter, less than 25 kg equipment to the Finnish market in order to avoid the obligation to insure", says Janne Jumppanen , director of the Finnish Transport Insurance Agency , to STT.
In our opinion, the new road traffic insurance law generally brings attitude and responsibility to the entire industry and its operations. In particular, the operation of joint-use electric scooters has required action and actions from the decision-makers for years. The Road Traffic Insurance Act already brings responsibility and obligation to this.
Let's drive sensibly, drive well and respect others.
